A new study by researchers from University of California, San Diego, finds that sildenafil, marketed as Viagra, is a more effective medication for treating erectile dysfunction than Pfizer’s blockbuster Viagra.
The findings, posted in theJournal of the American Medical Association, are part of a large study of patients in the U. S. who suffer from ED, which is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection strong enough for sexual intercourse.
This study, by researchers at the University of California, San Diego, examines the efficacy of sildenafil and its potential side effects, and suggests that a newer medication, tadalafil, may be more effective than Viagra in treating ED. The study found that sildenafil had similar effects as Viagra, but that tadalafil was associated with fewer side effects and improved erectile function in men with ED.
The study was led by Dr. David G. Ross, a urologist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine.
Ross and his colleagues used clinical trials of Viagra, sildenafil, and tadalafil to determine the most effective treatment for patients with ED. They randomly assigned 885 men with ED and a placebo group to receive either a placebo or a treatment with sildenafil, a selective inhibitor of PDE5, or a treatment with tadalafil, a non-selective inhibitor of PDE5.

“The results suggest that the combination of sildenafil and tadalafil, which have similar safety profiles and effects, may provide a new, safer option for patients with ED,” said Dr. Ross.
Viagra was approved in 1998 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug is also used in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Studies of Viagra have found that patients taking Viagra experienced a significant improvement in erectile function compared with patients on a placebo, but not men who did not take the drug.

In addition to the FDA-approved use of sildenafil for erectile dysfunction, studies have found that sildenafil is not an effective treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
In an interview with theNew Scientist, Dr. Ross said that while studies of tadalafil may be more in progress, “it is important to note that while the clinical trials were conducted under a different protocol, there is still very little experience with tadalafil in the U. S.”
“We are really just waiting for a better understanding of the efficacy of sildenafil and tadalafil and their potential side effects,” Dr. Ross said.
In the study, “Tadalafil improved the ability to achieve a strong erection in men with ED, but the effect on the ability to remain erect was less than when tadalafil was taken alone,” he added.
Dr. Ross’ team conducted the trial between July 1, 2014, and July 1, 2015.
The study was funded by Eli Lilly and Company.
The researchers said that their results “are of value to clinicians who have studied the efficacy of these drugs” and that they are “not suggesting that a new drug may be more effective than Viagra, sildenafil, or tadalafil in treating ED.
